Deborah's Story

I was the girl who came to Highland High in the middle of my Junior year (and not very happy) I missed the 3 months of my senior year because I picked up a case of mononucleosis during a summer trip to Maryland to see old friends, etc. I did spend time with my long-distance boyfriend and during the party, I got a lot of hugs and kisses on the cheek,TOO! I was really embarrassed to have to call my friends who might have given it to me while I was there because after the first week I was at Highland High, it seemed as though not one boy would talk to me. They were so friendly at first, I guess I'll never know. The reason I put this picture in is that it is the Senior Prom. When a close friend heard I wasn't going to my Sr.Prom, he decided to fly from Baltimore to St.Louis, Just To Take Me To The Prom. We still keep in touch. I've never heard of anyone else having a date for their prom, actually flying in from another state for the biggest dance of a senior's life. I enjoyed doing the yearbook and newspaper with Mr.Ott and I kept in touch with Mrs.Alarcon till she died a few years ago. I met my husband at college, then it took us til 1982 to decide to get married. Eight years later, after being told 'no children' we had a girl we named Sadie-Anne.who will be 21 on 3-13-2011. mpletely destroyed by fire in 3 hours! All we had left was a pit of ashes. I learned that possessions are not important are. It was the loss of our memories and, in a way our identities. Three months later, my daughter was hospitalized, at the age of 11, with diabetes. Her doctor said she most likely would have had type 2 later on in life but the traumatic stress and shock caused it to develope to Juvenile Type 1. A teenager, with diabetes is a handful. I was diagnosed with RSDS or CRPS in 2000. After many years suffering horrible chronic pain I found a doctor who listened and didn't accuse me of drug seeking. The initials are for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (or Causagial) It is a pain disease where the nerves for pain never shut off but just keep producing thousands of them 24/7. It started after a botched knee surgery left me partially paralized in my left leg. I've had it for 24 years and have broken all the major bones not to mention my share of concussions because I fall down alot. We live at 5,000 feet on the bench of the Wellsville Mtn. range. We have a beautiful view of the valley in front of us and snow capped mountains behind us. Jim designed our new home. We have 5 acres and just rebuilt on the highest part of it. We have plenty of room and if anyone would like to visit, let me know! We'd be happy to play tour guides & hotel!
